Want to be a part of the election process, beyond voting? Excited to give voters clear and honest information about how they can make a difference in civic life? Looking for a way to master your craft *and* learn about government and politics? Or interested in developing your skills and knowledge – whether in web development, fundraising, general research, or arts and sciences – while helping a little nonprofit grow?

If you answered yes to any fragment of those questions, we hope you’ll apply for an internship at Civic Juice!

In 2018, Civic Juice is publishing an online voter guide for New York State elections, expanding civics coverage into other formats, and building up our organizational infrastructure. We are looking for contributors interested in our projects, our mission, and in the chance to learn more about government and politics while honing their respective crafts.

College and graduate students, and others who are excited about the position are welcome to apply – especially if you have or are developing a background in: communications, journalism, sociology, government, law, political science, nonprofit management, graphic design, web development, and/or arts (any and all; creation and criticism).

We are looking for individuals who can contribute to and learn from our work in a variety of areas:

Political Research for 2018 NYS Elections

Civic Juice is covering the state elections in NY, and will track which candidates are running for which offices – as well as reaching out to candidates to fill out our comprehensive questionnaires. Your research will help us inform voters as early and completely as possible about who they will be considering for elective office, and you’ll learn a great deal about NY’s political system, process, and players.

Web Development Projects

In creating resources for NY elections and beyond, Civic Juice’s content often can be particularized to site visitors’ locations. We’ll work together to structure the data, and you’d help us create tools to link visitors with content most relevant to them (for example, linking visitors to their districts and the candidates running in those districts). We also have some interactive tools in the works, and would be happy to work with budding javascript developers.

Submissions Research

Later in the year, Civic Juice will grow our content offerings to feature reflections on themes in American political, civic, and cultural spheres. To find this featured content, we must post calls for submission in places where contributors will find it. You’d research where to post calls for submissions to find contributors in a variety of fields: arts and culture, government and law, and social sciences.

Fundraising Research

As Civic Juice moves towards a sustainable future, we need to prepare for fundraising efforts – that starts with researching foundations, grants, fellowships, and other forms of institutional financial support. You’d research potential funding sources and help us determine where to apply, learning valuable information about fundraising and nonprofit development in the process.

Social Media and Outreach

Help us get the word out about our ever-growing content and be on the front lines as we start planning events.

Graphic Design

We have so many ideas for making the website charming, playful, and enjoyable to visit – and we are open to new ideas. We also will need help with photo collection and editing, and developing visuals for upcoming projects. If you’re looking to build your graphic design portfolio, whether with an artistic bent or for infographics and data visualizations, we have projects for you!

Qualities

We are most interested in working with people who exhibit these personal qualities:

• Collaborative and communicative.
• Curious, industrious, and self-driven.
• Comfortable with pitching in as needed. Since our organization is still in startup phase, we all have our hands busy with so many different elements of the work, and we need people who are ready to pivot as new opportunities arise.
• Interested in a positive vision of civics. We know that sometimes work around government and politics can be boring, cold, depressing, or angry, so we want to give readers a comforting, happy place to dig into information about government – and we want team members who share that goal!

We are creating an organization where work and life are well-balanced, so we get the job done with flexible hours and remote work arrangements. To ensure that our team communication is smooth, we have regular check-in meetings, which we can customize with your class and work schedule in mind, and are often in touch by email and phone.

Note

We do not currently offer paid internships or stipends. We will work with you to: fulfill your school or program requirements to assist you in obtaining credit or funding, prioritize assignments that help build your resume and portfolio, help you think through career goals and paths, and if you follow through on your work, we will be delighted to provide you with written and verbal references.
