VII.1 proposed for 1870 • Election and removal of certain county officers.

The Text

Sheriffs, county treasurers, clerks of counties, the register of the city and county of New York, and the registers of deeds in all the counties where such registers are or may be authorized by law, coroners and district attorneys, shall be chosen by the electors of the respective counties once in every three years, and as often as vacancies shall happen. Sheriffs shall hold no other office, and shall be ineligible for the next three years after the end of their term. They may be required by law to renew their security, and in default of so doing, their offices shall be deemed vacant. Counties shall never be made responsible for the acts of their sheriffs. The governor may remove any officer named in this section, after opportunity to be heard upon written charges.
