The Text

The municipal court of the city of New York is continued with its present jurisdiction and such additional jurisdiction as may hereafter be conferred by the legislature except that the legislature shall not confer upon it any equity jurisdiction or any greater jurisdiction in other respects than was heretofore conferred upon the city court of the city of New York by the constitution. The said court shall consist of the justices now in office, who shall continue to be justices of the municipal court of the city of New York for the remainder of the terms for which they were severally elected or appointed and their successors who shall be elected for terms of ten years. They shall receive such compensation as may be fixed by or in accordance with law. The present justices and their successors shall possess such powers as may now or hereafter be conferred by law. The successors of the present justices shall be elected in the several districts in which the justices whom they succeed were elected or appointed. Vacancies in the office of justice of the municipal court of the city of New York shall be filled in the manner now or hereafter prescribed hy law. The office of president justice of the municipal court of the city of New York is continued with such powers and duties as are now attached thereto and such additional powers and duties as may hereafter he prescribed by law and the present incumbent shall continue in such office for the balance of the term for which he has been designated and his successor as president justice shall he chosen from among the elected justices in the manner and for the term now or hereafter prescribed by law. The legislature may change the boundaries of the several districts and may authorize the election of one or more additional justices in any district. Appeals from the municipal court of the city of New York shall be taken to the appellate term of the supreme court for the appropriate judicial department or otherwise as may from time to time he prescribed by law.
