Civic Juice is looking to expand our team with creative thinkers and doers, people who are excited by good ideas and have the drive to see them through, and who want to work together to create a more positive and thoughtful civic life.

Take a look at the different ways you can get involved!

Board of Directors

Civic Juice is looking to incorporate as a nonprofit in 2018 – before we file the paperwork, we need to build our board of directors.

Board members would commit to:

  • Bringing your unique perspective to inform our work and help us grow.
  • Meeting on a quarterly basis to guide the organization’s strategy, procedures, and finances.
  • Pitching in with our work in some way that is interesting to you and that advances our work, whether through event planning, outreach, content creation/joining our editorial board, or help with legal or accounting services.
  • Serving as a fiduciary for the organization.
  • And more – depending on what the board collectively decides.

We currently have a few prospective board members with backgrounds in government advocacy, voter education, and the NYC nonprofit world. Civic Juice would like to diversify the perspectives of our leadership, and is actively looking to find other young professionals in the New York City area (and possibly beyond) who can flesh out experience and background.

We are especially hoping to bring together women and people of color who want to collaborate in with positive spirit to create a tremendous web publication and organization, and who have the professional backgrounds in these areas:

  • Academics and Social Scientists – to help root our strategic vision in knowledge of and dialogue with US history, and the potential for its future.
  • Arts and Media (including writing, film, music, design, and more) – to help grow our content offerings and bring creativity and aesthetic pleasure to the site’s development.
  • Finance and Accounting – to help develop with budgeting and financial oversight.
  • Law – to help incorporate, comply with laws and regulations, and develop a forward-thinking governance structure and copyright/licensing practices.
  • Technology and Web Development – to help develop best practices, expand how we present our growing data collections on government and polities, and improve the site.

Editorial Board

Civic Juice will expand its content in the coming year, and we want to create an editorial board to brainstorm and guide our offerings and develop best practices.

How is our content going to evolve? While we continue publishing voter guides and resources on state and local governments, we’re also going to take on a new main format: a quarterly “magazine” that discusses a theme, value, principle, or ideal that is central to American identity.

That’s where the editorial board comes in. Together, the editorial board will decide on the quarterly theme, and help develop the content examining that theme with these questions in mind:

  • What are these values?
  • How have we thought about these values in the past?
  • Do we still hold these values today?
  • How do our governing systems and laws manifest these values?
  • Are we embodying them in our civic and private lives?
  • How are they reflected in our art, culture, and shared mythology?
  • How can we make good on these values, either by living them or by changing them?

We’ll look for content that covers the theme in a variety of ways, and so we’d like members of the editorial board to be young professionals who come with experience in these fields or pursuits (either from an analytical or creative lens):

  • Arts + Culture
    • movies, theater, television
    • music
    • books, literature, narrative/stories, nonfiction, poetry
    • art, design, fashion, food, games, photography
  • Civilization + Context
    • history + primary sources, myths + lore, philosophy, sociology, values + ethics
    • conflict/dispute resolution, peace studies
    • psychology, self help, spirituality
  • Government + Policy
    • government + its processes, systems, polities, good works
    • law + bodies of law
    • advocacy, nonprofits, policy
  • And More
    • education + schools
    • innovations + simulations + experiments in governance
    • nature
    • news, public opinion
    • shopping, crowdfunding projects

Volunteers + Contributors

This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to explore new talents or ideas, and isn’t ready for a board-level commitment.

We have ample opportunities for those interested in:

  • writing and other content creation
  • research re elections, policy, law, or government
  • web development
  • nonprofit/organizational establishment and administration
  • fundraising
  • finance and accounting
  • social media and outreach
  • event planning
  • and more
